Internship Terms of Reference

 

Title:                                                            Intern – Finance (2 Positions)

Organizational Section/Unit:                     UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific – Programme Development

Duty Station or Home-based:                    Bangkok, Thailand

Proposed Period:                                           4-6 months

 

 

Background of the internship:

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in the fight against drugs, crime, terrorism and corruption. It is a lead provider of specialized assistance to Governments and provides support to reach their targets under the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It operates un all regions through an extensive network of Field Offices. The Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) delivers technical assistance in UNODC mandates areas through the Regional Programme and oversees all other offices of UNODC in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Under the direct supervision of the Finance Associates, the Intern – Finance provides ensuring high quality, accuracy and consistency of work. The intern- Finance will be providing support to the Finance Associates for the execution of a wide range of financial services and administrative processes at the Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) and for its Programme Offices. The Intern-Finance is to ensure the timely, efficient and transparent use of financial resources and service delivery, in accordance with UNODC financial rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

The Intern – Finance works in close collaboration with the Core team as well as programme and project staff in ROSEAP, UNODC’s relevant regional country office (s), HQ as required to support the works of the Finance team.

 

Purpose of the internship:

The candidate/intern will gain both substantive and operational knowledge related to finance by performing duties in full compliance with UNODC rules, regulations, policies and standard operating procedures, including internal controls.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the Finance Associates, the intern -Finance will provide support for activities relating to finance. Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Verify the correctness and accuracy of supporting documents of payment request submitted by programme/project staff, making necessary calculations, and preparing requisitions
  • Verify and follow up supporting documents for payment paid via UNDP
  • Coordinate with programme/project staff regarding payment for UNDP/ESCAP Cost Recovery
  • Prepare documents for VAT exempt and submit to ESCAP
  • Reconcile financial transactions on web- based platforms
  • Extract and transfer data from web-based platform to excel and reformatting the data  
  • Keep track, monitor and alert when more funding is required or when anything needs to be liquidated on several kinds of commitments

 

Qualifications/Skills:

         Education:  Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Be enrolled in a university programme of Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related fields would be desirable, but it is not a requirement.

        Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in working in the UN system
  • Demonstrable skills in analytical thinking
  • Strong interest in issues related to transnational organized crime, security, peace, justice, and/or development;
  • Good IT competence, strong command of main office software program, proficiency in computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure within an international setting;
  • Ability to perform a variety of administrative tasks;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and a strong team working capacity.

        Language:

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Thai language is an asset.

 

Financial Aspects:

The United Nations does not remunerate interns in any way. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, health insurance, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns will not be entitled to any compensation for travel arrangements to and from the work location. Interns do not receive a salary or emoluments from the United Nations.

 

Terms of Appointment:

Duration of the internship is four to six (4-6) months. Participating interns are required to work full-time during office hours. Time is allowed for outside research work and interviews.
