Position Title: Interpretation and Translation Specialist

Duty Station: Tak province, Thailand

Classification: Long-term professional -or- independent consultant (contractor)

Desired Start Date: As soon as possible

Closing Date: 29 October 2022

 

Chemonics seeks an Interpretation and Translation Specialist for a USAID-funded project based in Tak province, Thailand. Chemonics International is a US-based international development consulting firm operating in over 80 countries. Our mission is to promote meaningful change around the world to help people live healthier, more productive, and more independent lives.

 

The Interpretation and Translation Specialist will be responsible for on-site concurrent (live) interpretation and will also include document translation between Myanmar and English languages. Live interpretation will consist of both online and in-person meetings to ensure two-way communication between program staff and counterparts. Document translation will consist primarily of translating legal documents and reports on an ad hoc basis. Live interpretation may also be needed on an ad hoc basis for meetings, training events, or workshops facilitated by the program team.

 

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

The Interpretation and Translation Specialist will have the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Live interpreting and translating (English - Myanmar, Myanmar - English) for meetings, training events, and workshops facilitated by program staff, including international staff such as external project consultants.
  • Live interpreting during in-person meetings and events with project counterparts and implementing partners.
  • Translate legal documents accurately (English - Myanmar, Myanmar - English) as required by the project within agreed upon deadlines.
  • Convert dialogue and convey the intent of the original speaker, understanding that many idioms and slang terms do not translate exactly between languages.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; academic study in English medium is strongly preferred.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in similar roles translating and interpreting between Myanmar and English languages.
  • Professional proficiency in both writing and speaking Myanmar and English languages.
  • Excellent active listening, oral communication, and presentation skills required.
  • Strong individual initiative and ability to manage daily activities and achieve expected results with or without direct oversight.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and cloud sharing platforms such as SharePoint.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the vocabulary surrounding legal academic and technical language required.
