private sector and local communities. Our innovations, knowledge and initiatives enable
countries to foster good forest governance, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and
achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.


RECOFTC is inviting applications for the position of Unit Director, Knowledge Management
and Strategic Communication. The successful applicant will be based at the RECOFTC
Main Office in Bangkok, Thailand. The contract duration is for 24 months, with a possibility of
extension subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.


Specific tasks and duties
The Unit Director will lead the knowledge management and strategic communication team
and provide strategic leadership in developing and implementing RECOFTC’s
communication and knowledge management strategies for RECOFTC at the international,
region and country levels. The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of
RECOFTC, is a member of RECOFTC’s Executive Committee and works closely with
RECOFTC staff from all other units to design and implement corporate knowledge,
communication and information technology systems.

The Unit Director’s main duties are:

  •  Build RECOFTC’s brand recognition and reputation as the world’s leading community forestry think tank, advisor, and project and program implementer
  •  Build a culture of communication and knowledge management and RECOFTC’s capacity to design and innovate, including the capturing, consolidation and sharing of experience and knowledge
  • Lead, build, supervise and mentor RECOFTC’s knowledge, communication and IT team
  • Lead the development and implementation of RECOFTC’s delivery model for knowledge,communication and IT including the contracting of external service providers
  • Build knowledge, communication, IT and associated innovations and practices into RECOFTC’s business development proposals and partnerships in collaboration with RECOFTC’s Executive Office, country teams and RECOFTC’s other technical experts
  • Work with the Executive Office to develop and implement a business development and partnership strategy, and identify and diversify fundraising sources for the next Strategic Phase (2023-2028) and beyond
  • Working with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) team, support the capturing of and reporting on RECOFTC’s achievements and impacts as a whole as well as those of its projects, programs and activities at all levels
  • Manage strategic global and regional positioning and crisis management, and provide strategic communication advice to RECOFTC management team
  • Support the development and implementation of RECOFTC’s due diligence process
  •  Lead the development and implementation of strategies and plans for RECOFTC’s engagement in major global and regional events
  •  Lead the planning and management of RECOFTC’s IT and operational systems
  •  With guidance from the Executive Office, manage the annual budget of the unit, and ensure deliverables are met on time, within budget, best achieve RECOFTC’s objectives and deliver value for money
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director


The Unit Director is one of the three unit directors at RECOFTC Main Office. They report
directly to the Executive Director and work closely with the Executive Office team and two
other Units: Program Coordination and Technical Services, and Corporate Services.


The Unit Director will also be required to ensure that RECOFTC’s Policies and Procedures,
its Code of Conduct, Gender Policy are followed and track staff performance and contracts
as well as all collaborative agreements with partners and subcontractors. RECOFTC has
clauses and statements condemning any form of conflicts of interest, corruption and sexual
harassment and/or abuse at the work place. Any such practices may be grounds for
immediate termination of contracts and agreements. Condemned practices include, but are
not limited to: abuse of position for personal gain or advantage; accepting directly or
indirectly any sum of money for unauthorised commission; offering preferential treatment or
promise in consideration of any act, decision or services connected with the discharge of the
employee’s official work; and using RECOFTC’s name in private transaction or business for
personal profit.


Qualifications and experience
The Unit Director, Knowledge Management and Strategic Communication will have the
following essential qualifications and experience:


Essential:

  • Advanced degree in communication, journalism, knowledge management, marketing or related field
  • At least 15 years of progressively responsible management experience in communication or knowledge management in a multicultural environment, including five years of international experience in a senior management position
  • Proven ability to design, implement, measure and refine an effective corporate communication strategy
  • Proven ability to assess and manage crises, and provide strategic advice to organizational leadership
  • Proven ability to oversee the design and implementation of knowledge management and IT systems
  • Proven ability to translate complex scientific findings into accessible content for policy makers, opinion leaders, practitioners, beneficiaries, donors and partners of an effective science-policy interface
  • Experience in media liaison
  • Proven ability to design and oversee the implementation of a content strategy and effective editorial systems
  • Ability to lead the design and adoption process of innovative technologies and approaches for communication, knowledge management and IT
  • Architect and champion of effective internal communication, including development of communities of practice to foster and build connections, sharing, exchange and learning
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills
  • Excellent people skills, including listening skills and an ability to interact effectively with and work alongside people at all levels in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment
  • Outstanding leadership skills and strong team manager and motivator
  • Outstanding writing and speaking skills in English


Desirable:

  • Experience in environmental and development communication
  • Experience working with communication officers and their teams in national offices in Southeast Asian and/or South Asian countries
  • Ability to speak and write in the languages of RECOFTC’s focal countries
