UNICEF Thailand Country Office works to ensure the rights of all children in Thailand.  This means the rights of every child living in this country, irrespective of their nationality, gender, religion or ethnicity, to:

  • survival – to basic healthcare, peace and security;
  • development – to a good education, a loving home and adequate nutrition;
  • protection – from abuse, neglect, trafficking, child labour and other forms of exploitation; and
  • participation – to express opinions, be listened to and take part in making any decisions that affect them

How can you make a difference?

UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) is seeking a qualified individual to assist with the preparation and implementation of specific activities under the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on the Protection of Children from all Forms of Online Child Exploitation and Abuse.

Background

UNICEF is the world's leading children's rights organization.  Over the last six decades, UNICEF has cultivated policy positions on a wide range of issues that affect children. UNICEF works in partnership with national governments and community groups and cooperates with other United Nations organizations in determining children’s needs and developing programs to fulfill them. UNICEF works on the ground in more than 150 developing and transitional countries to help children survive and thrive.

Work Assignment: The intern will be responsible for supporting projects as mentioned in the areas above.

The expected learning outcomes/experiences for the intern:

  • Deepened knowledge of the frameworks for child online protection, including in ASEAN, and how international standards can be utilized to leverage regional and national action
  • An understanding of the multi-sectoral, holistic nature of child online protection programming (child-rights based approach to child online protection, child protection system strengthening, child rights and business sector collaboration)
  • Experience of drafting regional guidance on child online protection for Governments
  • Experience of organizing high level regional workshops and conferences with the justice and ICT sectors
  • Development of skills in fostering effective partnerships with a regional body (ASEAN) and Government and private sector actors

End Product(s): 

  • Substantive inputs provided for the drafting for minimum regional legal standards for child online protection and the essential services package for victims of online exploitation and abuse
  • Workshop held on cross border collaboration on justice in ASEAN
  • Successful ASEAN-ICT forum held, and report of the forum produced

Duration of Contract:  6 June – 5 November 2022

Working Schedule: Full time

Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled in the last year of a master's or Ph.D. programme at an accredited institution or be a recent graduate (have graduated within the past two years) in Children’s Rights, Human Rights, Law, Development Studies, Child Online Protection, or other fields in Social Sciences related to the work of UNICEF’s Child Protection Programme.
  • Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor.
  • Have experience in research/practice in the field of child protection, in particular relating to children’s rights in relation to the digital environment, online child sexual abuse and exploitation or violence against children.
  • Have experience in working on child protection or child rights in the East Asia and Pacific Region will be an added advantage.
  • Have good reading and writing skills in English. Knowledge of any official languages spoken in East Asia and the Pacific Region will be an added advantage.

Conditions of Intern:

  1. Expenses: Stipend according to UNICEF’s guideline is applicable.
  2. Health/Medical insurance: UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship whether on or off UNICEF premises.  The intern must carry adequate and regular medical insurance.  The intern will be required to provide with a proof of medical insurance prior to commence work.
  3. Confidentiality. The intern is required to respect the confidentiality of information that s/he collect or is exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without the explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  4. Impartiality. The intern is required to respect the impartiality and independence required of UNICEF and will not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to UNICEF.
  5. Employment Prospects. There is no expectance of employment at the end of the internship.

Provision of Supervising and Monitoring:

The intern will work under the supervision of Child Rights and Child Justice Specialist, UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO)

Working Location: The intern will be working remotely with a regular communication with the direct supervisor.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
