Employee Health Coordinator, DEEP VZN Project

Job Summary  

We are seeking an Employee Health Coordinator to work for the USAID-funded Discovery and Exploration of Emerging Pathogens – Viral Zoonoses (DEEP VZN) project. DEEP VZN is a five-year project that will build scientific capacity in partner countries to safely detect and characterize unknown viruses which have the potential to spill over from wildlife and domestic animals to human populations. With up to twelve (12) countries, the project will carry out large-scale animal surveillance programs focusing on finding previously unknown pathogens from three viral families that have a large potential for viral spillover from animals to humans: coronaviruses, the family that includes SARS-CoV-2 the virus that causes COVID-19; filoviruses, such as the Ebola virus; and paramyxoviruses which includes the viruses that cause measles and Nipah. 

 

The Employee Health Coordinator is responsible for ensuring initial and on-going project-wide compliance with the DEEP VZN Occupational Health program in Thailand. The program aims to minimize the risk of human injury and infection during handling, collection, transport, testing, and storage of all samples (prospective and retrospective) and viruses under the DEEP VZN project.

 

Responsibilities include

  • Assist the consortium-wide employee health monitoring program, which will ensure employee safety and detect and address any instances of work-related exposure, illness, or injury
  • Promptly refer project staff for appropriate medical evaluation and care if incidents that might affect health and safety occur either during field or laboratory DEEP VZN work. If such incidents occur, immediately report to the local and global BSBS focal point and relevant staff
  • Conduct site-specific assessment of occupational health risks and communicate to personnel prior to conducting DEEP VZN project activities
  • Assure compliance with USAID DEEP VZN protocols and appropriate local labor laws and health policies to screen, promote, and monitor employee health in country
  • Coordinate baseline health screening of all staff involved in laboratory and field sampling activities by a medical provider
  • Ensure personnel have consulted with a human health worker regarding the immunizations required or recommended prior to participating in fieldwork that involves handling animals. Monitor compliance with vaccine requirements.
  • Coordinate and track and document vaccination status, medical monitoring/surveillance of all staff involved in fieldwork
  • Assure availability of first-aid kits, spill kits, eye wash stations, safety showers, fire suppression, etc. during fieldwork activities and all DEEP VZN personnel receive medical evaluation when there is an exposure, injury, or illness suspected to be work-related, and that such incidents are reported and managed promptly and appropriately.
  • Report regularly to the DEEP VZN Occupational Health Lead
  • Ensure documentation and record systems are in compliance with all local laws for confidentiality of employee health records

 

Qualifications 

  • Professional Degree in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, or Human Resources for Health required
  • At least five + (5) years of experience working in public health/human resources for health and/or animal health preferred
  • Experience working with employee health programs preferred
  • Familiarity with local regulations, programs, and operations including regulatory and reporting requirements 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 

 

  • Excellent written and spoken English and Thai 
  • Ability to manage, organize, develop plans, and generate data to make decisions 
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and analytical skills, good judgment, and creative problem-solving  
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills: ability to effectively collaborate with culturally diverse and interdisciplinary stakeholders 
  • Proficient computer skills with fluency in Microsoft Office suite of programs  
  • Legally authorized to work in Thailand
  • Hold the required license or certification in Thailand to provide health screening and referral for care services

 

Travel Requirements: 

  • Up to 30% national travel
