BACKGROUND

This is a search for young talent. Local and international students are encouraged to apply, with the latter contingent upon being granted an appropriate Thai visa.

This internship aims to offer students undergoing graduate or post-graduate studies a meaningful work experience by supplementing their learning through a practical and on-the-job training approach. In doing so, the intern’s knowledge is supplemented through a practical learning experience while IUCN derives some level of advantage from the young professional’s services as well as the possibility of gaining new perspectives from the intern.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This internship supports the External Stakeholder and Institutional Communications function of the Regional Director’s Office (RDO), towards IUCN’s overall mission of sharing and promoting the use of science-driven knowledge and tools for nature conservation and sustainable use in the Asia region. The intern’s key responsibilities cover:

• Scope: Institutional communications for region-wide external stakeholder engagement.
• Function: Communications support to IUCN Asia’s social media accounts, website and other online platforms.
• Key focus areas: Regional programme development and management, members and partners engagement, policy influence and external advocacy


Specific duties and target outputs include:

1. To assist in compiling and systematising data, information, other in-house resources as standardised reference for content creation
Outputs: prototype messages on IUCN Asia’s key programmatic results and institutional contributions, for target external audiences

2.To identify opportunities and introduce improvements in using online communication support platforms
Outputs: proposed re-design of social media, website and other online platforms and their use-guidelines

3. To prepare communication materials to support information drives and campaigns – including news updates, feature stories and other e-publications
Outputs: series of periodic posts, feeds and audience-engagements through these online platforms

4.To assist in liaising with IUCN global and country teams for joint communication projects and events, and for institutional periodic reporting requirements
Outputs: compilation of communication materials, reports and other documents, and promotional/souvenir items – following IUCN branding and style guide

5. To carry out other relevant tasks as mutually agreed with line manager

GUIDANCE AND MENTORING

The selected candidate will undergo a general orientation training on IUCN’s:
• Asia regional programme and strategy;
• institutional functions of the regional Secretariat;
• policies and standards for external stakeholder engagement; and,
• communications style guide, branding and quality-assurance checks.

In performing the assigned duties, the intern will have the opportunity to interact with key units and teams at the Regional Office, across the region, and/or with Headquarters. Overall he/she will learn communication strategies, methods and tools to influence decision-making and action by the region’s key stakeholders in nature conservation for sustainable development.

REQUIREMENTS

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate university programme (e.g., Bachelors or its equivalent) and have completed at least three years of fulltime study or currently enrolled in a graduate university programme. The internship experience should be in line with one’s studies or the requirements set by the academic institution;
• Be in a “gap year” between studies with a clear goal of returning to complete or initiate studies post-internship;
• Computer literate in standard software applications; proficient in the use of office applications (MS Word and Excel) and web-based management systems;
• Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views; and,
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
