Introduction

The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based and receive samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border.

 

Project Background :

The Malaria Elimination Task Force (METF) was launched in 2014 to respond to the threat of drug-resistant malaria. The main objective is to eliminate malaria from the communities in Kayin State, Myanmar.

METF operates COVID 19 centers on the Thai-Myanmar border and provides prevention, diagnostic and treatment services to the mobile, migrants and IDPs.

 

Job title:              Field Epidemiologist

Location:             Mae Sot

Status:                 Full time

Probation:          SMRU can terminate employment at 3 months if performance inadequate

Report to:           Unit Director, Project Coordinator

Staff under supervision: None

Contract duration: Initially 1 year with a possibility of contract extension (subject to the availability of funding)

 

Tasks and responsibilities:

The epidemiologist will be accountable to provide technical oversight and support for the strengthening and use of malaria and health information systems to support the malaria elimination and COVID 19 program as follow,

  1. Routine monitoring of the malaria data received from the village malaria posts network for the timely and completeness of the reports
  2. Routine monitoring of the COVID 19 data received from the COVID 19 centers for the timely and completeness of the reports
  3. Routine data analysis, and communication of malaria and COVID 19 epidemiological situation to the operation team
  4. Assist in the preparation of the technical report to the National and the funding agencies
  5. Assist the implementation and design of operation research activities to test new strategies and systems for the surveillance system
  6. Provide the technical support in project coordination, training, workshop, and state holder meeting as necessary
  7. Support documentation and dissemination of the project implementation results through technical reports, and publications
  8. Conduct field visits and monitoring to the sites as necessary

 

Job requirements:

Education:

  • Master degree in epidemiology, public health, or other related fields with specialized in field epidemiology and at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Essential criteria:

  • Experience with assessing, setting up and monitoring infectious diseases particularly in malaria control and elimination.
  • Strong skills in using statistical packages such as SPSS, STATA and R programming language
  • Strong analytical skills in monitoring and evaluating the program activities
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentations skills including the ability to interact with government and non-government colleagues and partners
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently in a team

Desirable criteria:

  • Good command of the Burmese language
  • Experience in operational research
