Overview:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking a Project Manager to ensure the successful development and delivery of a Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) funded project to strengthen capacity and collaboration for combatting illegal trade of pangolin and other wildlife in Thailand. The project involves: i) developing a more robust understanding of illegal wildlife trade (IWT) routes and dynamics along Thailand’s road and rail network, and ii) working with government, law enforcement and the private sector to improve detection of trafficked wildlife and enhance co-ordination and cross-sector cooperation to combat IWT. This work will include working closely with law enforcement agencies, dog detection units and trainers, and entities in the ground transport sector (i.e., corporations, associations).

The key purpose of this Thailand-based position is to co-ordinate all matters related to this project in partnership with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. The post holder will work closely with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), its partners, and other stakeholders to lead project development and implementation; multi-partner coordination; work planning management; data management, analysis, and dissemination; trainings, workshops, and reporting; and assist with financial administration of project funds; ensuring that the project aligns with ZSL’s mission and meets internal and donor requirements.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and assist in recruiting and building relationships with new and existing project partners and collaborators, ensuring efficient communication and engagement of law enforcement agencies, private sector companies, and local communities through the life of the project.

  • Develop workplans and budgets for project activities and coordinate with the Finance Officer to ensure regular (monthly) monitoring of project activities and expenditure.

  • Undertake research, analysis, and consolidation of existing literature and data from wildlife seizures and online datasets; develop and conduct key informant interviews; compile, manage, and support regular analysis and intelligence reports on illegal wildlife trade of target species, identifying modus operandi and actors involved.

  • In consultation with ZSL staff and project partners, coordinate the preparation, design (where appropriate), and delivery of stakeholder trainings and workshops, particularly for high-level government and corporate partners.

  • Coordinate the development and piloting of communications tools and products, where appropriate.

  • Produce regular summary reports, donor and technical reports, and presentations.

  • Assist in regular review and revision of Stakeholder Engagement and Health and Safety plans.

  • Undertake other tasks relevant to the project as assigned.

Person Specification:

This position is open to Thai citizens and foreigners fluent in Thai and with existing permission to reside in Thailand.

Desired Skills and Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in social sciences, development, environment/wildlife or natural resource management, law enforcement or forensics and/or related fields.

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in project management, particularly in managing budgets and work planning, delivery of project activities, and reporting.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders in Thailand.

  • Strong coordination and communication skills; with demonstrated public speaking experience.

  • Professional experience in building and supporting stakeholder engagement, ideally with illegal wildlife trade, corporate social responsibility, or law enforcement focus.

  • Demonstrated experience in convening, designing, and facilitating meetings, trainings and workshops from conception through delivery.

  • Knowledge of Thai laws and strategies relevant to illegal wildlife trade, law enforcement, and/or corporate social responsibility.

  • An ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.

  • Comfortable and willing to work closely with law enforcement dog units and other live wildlife.

  • An ability to work remotely and coordinate regular reporting and meetings to both ZSL and project partners.

  • Excellent command of both spoken and written Thai and English.

  • An ability and willingness to travel and be willing to work outside of normal office hours as necessary.

Duration of Contract & Location:

12 months, with funding secured for at least one additional year upon successful annual progress reviews.

The position is based in Kanchanaburi, with regular travel to Bangkok and other locations as necessary.
