Training to Teachers on Early Literacy and Math (ELM) at Center

Eat, Play, Love and Read Project

Background

Save the Children, Thailand has been implementing ‘Eat, Play, Love and Read’ (EPLR) Project in Si Shakon and Reuso districts of Deep South, Thailand since 2019 with the objective to improve the foundational skills of children aged 4-6 years through implementation of ‘Ready to Learn’ Common approach. This approach provides learning opportunities to children at home and centers and helps acquire foundational skills in the areas of linguistic and cognitive development.

The early exposure of quality care and development experiences provided to children allow an opportunity to acquire foundational skills that are only possible when children are exposed to interactive, playful, safe, and protective learning environment. However, learning success of children depends upon various factors associated to them amidst teacher effectiveness is one that has been found most important predictors of children’s learning. Therefore, it has been important to develop capacity of teachers and enhance their competencies to provide necessary care and education support to younger children.

To address the learning needs of children and improve classroom learning environment at centers, EPLR project has designed five days teachers training on early literacy and math (ELM) to develop the capacity of teachers and enhance their competencies to make them enable to be an effective teacher. The training will allow teachers to understand basic concept of children’s development and learning, allow teachers to plan and design appropriate learning experiences and help to create an effective, inclusive, and friendly learning environment at centers. In addition to that it includes practical sessions associated to literacy and numeracy skills that amplify teachers’ professional practices to apply in classrooms.

  • Understand the ECCD curriculum expectations and basic teachers’ competencies required to be an effective teacher.
  • Understand about how children acquire and develop literacy and math skills.
