Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely iv) do research focused on infections in infancy and v) do several laboratory-based research projects.

SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based and receive samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border. The haematology laboratory of SMRU runs routine analysis of blood samples (clinical cases and study patients) and few projects on the characterization of genotypes and phenotypes of inherited red blood cells disorders (G6PD deficiency and haemoglobinopathies).

The laboratory technician will have the following tasks:

Running the routine work of haematology lab (CBC and CRP analysis, samples storage and sorting, databases update) in particular WBCs manual differential count, RBCs morphology and reticulocytes count.
Characterization by spectrophotometer and FACs of G6PD phenotypes using established SOPs.
Support to the other staff members in the characterization of G6PD and other inherited RBCs disorders using conventional and real-time PCR

Tasks and Responsibilities

Responsible for blood manual slide reading (WBC differential and RBC morphology)
Run the routine work of haematology lab (CBC and CRP analysis, samples storage and sorting, databases update) together with the other lab staff.
Perform G6PD tests (by spectrophotometry and flow-cytometry)
Support to the other staff members in the analysis of genotypes reporting on results to other members of the laboratory and SMRU clinical staff.

Essential criteria

A degree in medical technology.
A license for professional practice of medical technology (ใบประกอบวิชาชีพเทคนิคการแพทย์ )
Immediate availability
Fluency in Thai and English.
The ability to report to English speaking supervisor and relate with Thai and foreigner colleagues.
The ability to follow instructions and work independently
