Position Title: Sustainable Coconut Roundtable Consultant

Background and Rationale
USAID Green Invest Asia, a project implemented by Pact and its partners, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by mobilizing private finance to upscale and drive investment in the agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU) sector toward low emission yet profitable business models. To achieve this, the Activity is:
Identifying a pipeline of investments in land use and land management;
Encouraging investments by banks, financial institutions, and funds into sustainable, low-emission land use management business; and
Building a community of practice in sustainable landscape finance to tackle systemic issues that block the development and financing of low-emission land use management.
Specific Task
USAID Green Invest Asia and partners successfully launched the Sustainable Coconut Charter in Nov 2020 as part of the Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable. This is the coconut industry’s first global Sustainable Coconut Charter, which aims to improve farmer livelihoods, lessen the carbon footprint of coconuts and boost supply to meet rising global demand.
The launching event featured the charter’s founding signatories plus panel discussions on potential impacts of coconut production on deforestation and biodiversity conservation.
AAK, Barry Callebaut, FrieslandCampina, Harmless Harvest Thailand, Nestlé, and Unilever are founding signatories of an industry collaboration that defines coconut sustainability, and outlines focus areas, principles, and sustainability program goals/ outcomes in coconut supply chains. It also aims to harmonize buyers’ requirements for supply chain partners.
With the guidance of the Partnership and Sustainability Manager, this consultancy will be responsible for developing a white paper and a roadmap for the development and implementation of Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable.
Formalize and strengthen the structure of the coconut charter.
Draft a white paper outlining the best platform model that will enable the long-term sustainability of the Roundtable. The paper should refer to other sector models such as GPSNR, GCP, SRP and RSPO in determining pros/cons and recommendations of structure.
Identify potential institutional partners and coordinate conversations with the Partnership and Sustainability Manager
Develop a roadmap to implement the governance arrangements and structure for the platform and coordinate with the Partnership and Sustainability Manager and Chief of Party on a strategy for endorsement by founding members and partners.
Responsible providing solutions to how to best manage the overall processes of implementation of platform activities.
