Program - USAID Wildlife Asia

USAID Wildlife Asia seeks to significantly reduce wildlife crime in Southeast Asia and China by employing a comprehensive regional cooperation approach. Specifically, Wildlife Asia will (i) Reduce consumer demand for wildlife and wildlife products in target areas; (ii) Strengthen regional law enforcement capacity and coordination; (iii) Increase commitment to addressing counter wildlife trafficking (CWT); and, (iv) Support the USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia’s (RDMA’s) coordination of regional CWT stakeholders and efforts to strengthen the US Government (USG) interagency CWT initiatives.

 

USAID Wildlife Asia is based in Bangkok, Thailand and the geographic scope includes all ASEAN countries, with a focus on the Lower Mekong (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia) and China. The species of primary interest are elephants (ivory), pangolins, rhinos (rhino horn), and Asian big cats. The project will soon begin its fifth and final year of implementation.

Position Summary

Freeland, as one of the main sub-contractors under USAID Wildlife Asia, is recruiting for a full-time Project Support Officer position to support activities focused on strengthening law enforcement capacity and coordination counter wildlife trafficking. The position will be based at the USAID Wildlife Asia office in Bangkok, Thailand with an expected start date of October 1, 2020 and will continue through to the end of the program in June, 2021. The position will report to USAID Wildlife Asia’s Senior National Training Coordinator and Senior Technical Advisor.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the process of institutionalizing USAID Wildlife Asia’s law enforcement training tools, materials, packages, apps and websites including assistance with translation into Thai, and coordination with relevant Thai law enforcement agencies.
  • Help develop and strengthen partnerships and working relationships with relevant partners and government counterpart agencies especially in Thailand but also within the region more broadly.
  • Manage and coordinate the logistical and administrative aspects of virtual and physical meetings including all the required set-up and technical backstopping.
  • Collect, manage and synthesize information relating to training events and share with the program’s Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist as required. This will include compiling and managing training statistics such as:
    • Number of people trained
    • Number of agencies involved in training
    • Number of countries reached/ involved in training
    • Ratio of males to females involved in training
    • Cost-share data.
  • Maintain and manage a roster of subject matter experts and instructors as a tool for sharing with partners and national counterpart agencies.
  • Assist senior team members in responding promptly to requests from USAID for information, and program statistics.
  • Support the team in the preparation of progress reports, concept notes, training reports, event forms, agendas, travel requests and other documents related to the organization of events, workshops and meetings.
  • Assist with the drafting of letters and other correspondence to USAID Wildlife Asia’s counterpart agencies and partners.
  • Participate in workshops and meetings and other events and document discussion and outcomes for presentation to the rest of the team.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings, prepare meetings minutes and disseminate to the team.
  • Coordinate with the USAID Wildlife Asia communications team to compile and manage relevant website statistics including number of visits and downloads of the law enforcement training tools and materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor and/or Master’s degree preferably in a field related to conservation and development.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in donor-funded contracts and project coordination ideally including training and capacity building initiatives.
  • Knowledge and working experience with government agencies especially law enforcement in Thailand and the region an advantage.
  • Experience supporting USAID programs preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Fluent Thai and superior English written and verbal communication skills with ability to provide translation/interpretation support.
  • Able to work effectively with the Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Readiness to travel within the region and internationally as required.
  • A passion for protecting the environment and safeguarding biodiversity important.
