Senior Laboratory Technician

SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome Trust (UK). The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak Province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

Shoklo Malaria Research Unit has a laboratory position available for enthusiastic persons interested in entomology research. We are seeking for full time technicians to work on mosquito vector-borne diseases. The post-holders will be involved in the epidemiological studies involving malaria vector. 


Job title: Senior Laboratory Technician

Location: Mae Sot

Status: Full time

Report to: Entomologist

Staff under supervision: Molecular entomology team (2 peoples)


The person selected for this job will be in charge of all activities related to the processing of  entomological samples in molecular biology. On a daily basis, this person will be involved in project management and experiments:

  • Management and supervision:
    • supervise molecular/identification team and coordinate activities;
    • procurement of lab supplies and maintenance of the equipment;
    • sample storage and inventory;
    • data management: recording, analysis, entry and reporting of the data;
    • development and writing of SOPs.
  • Perform routine analysis and participate to assay development for :
    • DNA extraction including buffer preparation, reagents aliquoting, control of the DNA extraction using a biophotometer, pooling and dilution of the DNA extracts, cleaning DNA extraction room;
    • PCR including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, using thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, preparing samples for DNA sequencing;
    • qPCR: including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, use of a real-time thermocycler.


Essential Criteria

  • Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent
  • Ability to supervise people and coordinate activities
  • Previous experience in molecular biology
  • Excellent communication skills including fluent in English and Thai
  • Computing skill
  • Willingness to live in Mae Sot
  • Willingness to learn different techniques
  • Ability to work as part of multinational team
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Able to work under pressure

    Desirable Criteria

  • Karen and Burmese is an asset
  • Previous mosquito experience
  • Experience in research
