About Vitamin Angels

 

Vitamin Angels (VA) is a US-based, international non-governmental organization that delivers evidence-based nutrition interventions to nutritionally at-risk beneficiaries by targeting women and children during the first 1,000 days of life (i.e., conception to 24 months of age) and children up to 5 years of age. To fulfill this mission, we provide annual in-kind grants of vitamin A and deworming to children under 5 and multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) to pregnant women by coordinating with governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to effectively and efficiently fill gaps in coverage.

 

Role or Purpose of Position

 

VA seeks to continue expansion of its evidence-based nutrition interventions coverage in Thailand and is engaging a Consultant to support preliminary exploration of the opportunity for VA to develop a network of local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community based organizations (CBOs), and/or interested government health agencies to deliver multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) for pregnant women in Thailand, and/or vitamin A supplementation and deworming for children under the age of five years. The Consultant will also support preliminary exploration of the opportunity for VA to establish a supplemental direct-feeding program for pre-school aged children in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities in Thailand.

 

Consultant will familiarize her/himself with all relevant, national/regional policies for vitamin A supplementation, deworming, multiple micronutrient supplementation for pregnant women, and nutrition interventions for pre-school aged children. Consultant will also review VA policy and technical documents and agrees to seek clarification of all issues with the technical contact person assigned to Consultant.

 

Specifically, Consultant will focus on: i) quantifying the need for, assessing feasibility of, and designing an implementation plan for an evidence-based nutrition program to reach unserved/underserved children and pregnant women in Thailand, ii) quantifying the need for, assessing feasibility of, and designing an implementation plan for a supplemental direct-feeding program for pre-school aged children in Thailand, and iii) identifying and meeting with key stakeholders involved in micronutrient supplementation, deworming, and other evidence-based nutrition intervention programs.

 

Main objectives of the consultancy will include:

 

    1. Perform a needs analysis and develop an implementation plan for a quality evidence-based nutrition intervention program in Thailand.

This should include consideration of the following:

      1. Current coverage data and gaps in coverage for vitamin A supplementation, deworming, and MMS supplementation for pregnant women in Thailand;
      2. Current national government policies for vitamin A supplementation and deworming for children under the age of five, and MMS supplementation for pregnant women;
      3. Presence of other stakeholders distributing vitamin A and deworming for children, and/or distributing MMS for pregnant women in Thailand;
      4. Presence of existing NGO, CBO, and faith-based organization (FBO) networks;
      5. Feasibility of importing and clearing customs of shipments of vitamins and/or deworming tablets to Thailand;
      6. Feasibility of engaging Government/NGOs/CBOs/FBOs in vitamin A, deworming, and MMS distribution; and
      7. If necessary and feasible, plan of action for initiating and growing a quality and complementary NGO micronutrient and deworming distribution network.

 

    1. Perform a needs analysis and develop an implementation plan for a quality supplemental direct-feeding program for pre-school aged children in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities in Thailand.

This should include consideration of the following:

      1. Current nutrition programs in Thailand targeting preschool-aged children;
      2. Presence of other stakeholders engaged in supplementary feeding programs for preschool-aged children
      3. Feasibility of engaging Government/NGOs/CBOs/FBOs in supplementary feeding programs for preschool-aged children; and
      4. If necessary and feasible, plan of action for initiating and growing a quality supplementary feeding program for preschool-aged children.

 

    1. Identify and meet with key stakeholders involved in MMS distribution to pregnant women, vitamin A supplementation and deworming for children under-five, and/or supplemental direct feeding programs for preschool-aged children.

      These stakeholders will include the following categories:

      1. Government offices responsible for micronutrient supplementation, deworming, or other relevant health services;
      2. UN agencies, and bilateral and multilateral agencies involved in technical and advisory services to the government of Thailand for micronutrient supplementation, deworming, or other relevant health services;
      3. Local NGOs with the potential to distribute MMS, vitamin A and/or deworming to fill gaps in the existing government supplementation program;
      4. Local NGOs/CBOs/FBOs with the potential to integrate a supplementary feeding program for preschool-aged children into their current services; and
      5. International NGOs involved in micronutrient supplementation, deworming, or other health services.

 

Deliverables

 

The Consultant will, during the consultancy deliver to VA:

 

  1. A summary of the results of the needs analysis and implementation plan for a quality evidence-based nutrition intervention program in Thailand.
  2. A summary of the results of the needs analysis and implementation plan for a quality supplemental direct-feeding program for pre-school aged children in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities in Thailand.
  3. A list of at least 20 key stakeholders in the categories described above and a short description of the opportunity for collaboration with Vitamin Angels.
  4. Fortnightly updates on progress made.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Based in Thailand;
  • Fluent in English and Thai;
  • Master’s degree in Public Health or Nutrition or Community Medicine or equivalent professional experience;
  • Strong understanding of maternal and child health and nutrition in the region;
  • Minimum two years of experience performing consultancies with INGOs, bilateral, or multilateral agencies;
  • Existing network of contacts with many different NGOs in Thailand;
  • Existing network of contacts within bilateral, multilateral, and government agencies in Thailand;
  • Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Willing and able to travel domestically during the consultancy;
  • Willing to work from home and in possession of reliable telephone/internet connectivity;
  • Superior written and oral communications skills;
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail; and
